Sleman Juara Umum. This is the beginning of an outback experience of immense variety as we travel north-west along the famous Tanami Track against the northern verge of the West MacDonnell Ranges to Tilmouth Well. A short rest break, coffee, a bite to eat and we travel on towards Newhaven with expected arrival late morning. An early lunch before preparing our camp and getting ourselves organized.

After that we will start our experiences around Newhaven with rock escarpments, red sand-hill Spinifex country and the Lake Bennett Salt Lake system. The variety of vegetation will promote endless stops and leisure time to observe our feathered entertainers. As daylight draws to an end, we’ll find a location to capture the imagination to observe a classic desert sunset. Back to camp for dinner cooked over the campfire as the outback stirs into life. Includes meals: (L), (D).

Day 2: Our morning reveille will be the birds as they break the chill and silence of the outback morning. A hearty breakfast before spending the day traveling this enormous parcel of tranquil land in search of anything rare, unique, varied and beautiful that has wings. This will be a day of group consensus, visiting places and doing things that you want to. The day’s end will be a twilight full of activity with another typical outback sunset before a stunning evening meal and, no doubt, a few stories starting to flow. Includes meals: (B), (L), (D).

Day 3: After another early rise and breakfast we will break camp and, dependent upon weather and track conditions, travel south via permitted Aboriginal Lands including Papunya and Haasts Bluff Communities and then via the Namatjira to Gosse Bluff (Tnorala) before arriving at the oldest Lutheran based Aboriginal Community in Australia – Hermannsburg (Ntaria). An introduction to Hermannsburg’s history, a stop at the local store for refreshments and an early lunch before continuing our journey along the Ellery River system.

This passes through stunning gorge and ravine country towards the location of one of the Territories first remote Police Stations – Boggy Hole. This will be our location for the next two evenings.
After preparing camp you can take a wander and make yourself known to this wonderful location. Should conditions or permission not be available to access the south track, our journey will require a return via our earlier route, traveling the Larapinta Road to Hermannsburg with a late afternoon arrival at Boggy Hole. Includes meals: (B), (L), (D).

Day 4: At your leisure you can stroll your way around this amazing wilderness location. Sit by the water’s edge and be amazed at the resident bird life as the parrots chirp and flit from tree to tree. The Whistling Kites glide the face of the rock escarpment while Red Tailed Cockatoos leave their nightly perch in hunt of seeds in other locations. The clowning antics of the Babblers and the activities of a myriad of species will dominate a day of pure solitude which is truly rare in today’s pace driven lifestyle. Our last night under the stars of the Southern Milky Way, an open fire and discussions dominated by the day’s experiences. Includes meals: (B), (L), (D).

Day 5: We break camp early, meandering our way through the creek bed system towards "Running Waters", a smaller watering system along Ellery Creek. We emerge from the National Park where we join the Ernest Giles track at the junction of the Palmer River. We travel through open mallee and gibber country, home to the raptor and the larger ground birds – Emu and Bustard. Lunch will be at some secluded and remote location for the last time.

We continue to travel east and join the Stuart Highway approx 130km’s south of Alice Springs. Visiting anglers will be fishing some of the most pristine and untouched watersheds in the Amazon. Our floating barge operation allows you to pursue record-class peacock bass on the Unini River, as well as within lagoons located in this watershed. This is a true trophy peacock bass fishery. If your desire is to catch lots of 3 to 5 lb fish, this is not the destination for you. However, if fish in excess of 10 lbs are your prized quarry, you will find no better location. The camp is mobile and, depending on fishing conditions, the owners of this operation strive to constantly keep our clients on fish. The Unini River is a tributary of the Rio Negro (itself the largest tributary of the mighty Amazon River) located approximately 210 miles northwest of Manaus. The river is roughly 200 miles long with at least 250 connecting lakes and lagoons throughout its course. Its location is such that it can only be reached by private charter plane. The camp is located about 165-200 miles from where the Unini River empties into the Rio Negro. About 20 miles up river from the mouth, there are three sets of rapids and falls which prohibit navigation further up river except during the period of highest water levels in the summer months. There are small villages near the area of the falls, but only a few scattered locals live further upriver and the fishing pressure and commercial is virtually nonexistent. The catch rates at this operation during the 2004-05 season for both numbers and trophy fish (those over 14 lbs) was as good, or better, than any operation in Brazil.

You will be fishing main river structure, as well as a multitude of lakes, backwater bays and hidden lagoons off the Unini River. The typical fishing day is long (we figure you can rest back in the states) and runs from 6:30 a.m. until 6:00 p.m. Anglers are paired two to a boat with an experienced Brazilian guide. The boats are 17-1/2 feet long, have stabile raised casting decks, swivel seats, 50-HP outboards and electric trolling motors. These boats can cruise over shallow sandbars and flats and get you into places that other, heavier, fiberglass boats cannot reach. The fishing boats are fully equipped aluminum boats with outboard engines, life jackets, first-aid kits, and an icebox for cold drinks and snacks. One of the most appealing and exciting aspects of fishing for peacock bass is their propensity for attacking surface lures and flies. The strike is so dramatic that you will be startled when the first few occur. Peacock bass fishing is very similar to largemouth bass fishing in the states. Both species ambush prey from cover and structure. Cast topwater plugs, jerkbaits, Banjo Minnows, spoons or jigs to stumps, shoreline blowdowns, rockpiles, creek mouths and sandbars .If you desire to fly fish, the most successful flies are larger profiled patterns - all tied on 2-0 to 4-0 quality saltwater hooks - such as Dahlberg-style divers, large profiles baitfish patterns, High-Tie or variations of Lefty's Deceivers & Clouser Minnows. These should be tied in a diversity of colors. This region is most productive following the rainy season, as the rivers, creeks and lagoons recede and the fish are drawn out of the maze of trees, root systems and lush vegetation. Keep in mind that the productiveness of your peacock bass adventure is largely dictated by the water levels, and occasionally the rainy season fails to abide by schedules and may add mid-season downpours.

Trip Itinerary:

Friday: International overnight flight to Manaus, Brazil on TAM Brazilians Airlines.

Saturday: Early am arrival in Manaus. Clear customs. Breakfast at local hotel. Board charter flight to camp. Fishing begins if there is no problem reaching camp early due to weather or logistical factors.

Sunday-Friday: Six days of fishing

Saturday: Charter back to Manaus. Accommodations at hotel.

Sunday: Early afternoon departure to Miami. Arrive in Miami approximately 7:30 PM. Possible connection to your home city or overnight stay in Miami.

Captivating Patagonia with Iguazu Extension

Tour Itinerary:

Day 1: Santiago. We will introduce you to the best that Brazil has to offer - we've done the research and chosen what we feel are the best of the best destinations and activities. You'll: Walk on one (or more) of a hundred white-sand beaches, hike the mountain trails, and/or snorkel in the crystal clear waters off of beautiful Ilha Grande, only three hours from Rio. Stroll the famous beaches of Ipanema and Copacabana.

Marvel at nature's handiwork at breathtaking Iguaçu Falls. Fish for piranha, birdwatch (macaws, toucans, parrots, storks, herons, ibis, and much more), horseback ride, see capybara (the world's largest rodent), monkeys, jacaré (alligators), and maybe even an armadillo or anteater in the teeming Pantanal. For wildlife and beauty, it would be hard to rival our "Best of Southern Brazil" trip.

Tour Itinerary

Day 1: Rio de Janeiro - Sugar Loaf Mountain, Copacabana & Ipanema Beaches

Rio is all you've heard and imagined - and MORE. Lively, friendly, beautiful people. Great beaches. Gorgeous city. Whether you're a city person, a beach person, or neither, Rio is guaranteed to capture your imagination. If after this visit Rio isn't on your top three lists of cities, we'd be very much surprised… Lodging in a comfortable hotel. Includes: (L), (D);

Day 2 – 4: Iguaçu Falls

Air travel to Foz do Iguaçu. Wow!! If you aren't moved by this spectacle, you need resuscitation! The greatest waterfall in South America; perhaps in the world. One day to see the Brazil side and a wonderful nearby aviary and another day to view the Argentine side of the falls. Personally, on my list of awesome natural phenomena, Iguaçu Falls ranks second only to the very best northern lights. Lodging in a comfortable hotel. Includes: (B), (L), (D);

Day 5 – 9: Pantanal

The largest wetlands in the world and highest concentration of wildlife in Latin America occupy an area within Mato Grosso and Mato Grosso do Sul and extends into Bolivia and Paraguay. Gateways are Campo Grande and Corumba for the South and Cuiaba for the North. Air travel to Campo Grande, land transport to camp.
If you like to view wildlife at home in its natural habitat, without a lot of other tourists around competing for the view, this may be the best place in the world to do it! Arguably as rich in numbers and diversity of birds and animals as the tropical rainforest, the Pantanal's reduced vegetative cover, islands of high ground in the rainy season, and pockets of water in the dry season, make wildlife viewing much more efficient and satisfying - any time of year! Jacaré (alligator); howler, capuchin, squirrel, and marmoset monkeys; capybara (the largest rodent in the world); 3 kinds of deer; coatimundi; 2 species of anteater; white-collared peccary; crab-eating fox; and agouti were among the animals are among the animals you are likely to see. Birds include tiger herons, egrets, jabiru storks, ducks, ibis, savannah hawk, caracara, chaco chacalacha, curassao, jacana, parrots, macaws, owls, toucans, kingfishers, oropendula, and many more. The Pantanal, the largest alluvial plain in the world, is still healthy and unpolluted and home to such a diversity of plants, animals, and birds that it will take your breath away. Horseback ride, fish for piranha, birdwatch, search for the elusive anaconda, pet an armadillo, spot jacaré at night - there's so much to do you won't want to leave. Lodging in bush camps, sleeping in hammocks (alternative sleeping arrangements can be made, but the hammocks are surprisingly comfortable!) in screened, thatched enclosures; basic but tasty and healthful meals; great ambiance; expert trained knowledgeable guides. Includes: (B), (L), (D);

Day 10 – 14: Ilha Grande

Fly to Rio and transfer by land and sea to beautiful, idyllic Ilha Grande: wonderful secluded beaches, friendly little village, no roads or vehicles - NONE! Great trails to hike, fun little restaurants, boat trips, snorkeling, rain forest treks. For such a small island, there's way too much to do.… or you can just relax and enjoy the incredible numbers of hummingbirds around the communal area. Good food, good people, good fun! Includes: (B), (L), (D);

Day 15 – 16: Rio de Janeiro

Land travel back for one more day in romantic, beautiful Rio. Try some of the local specialties, explore the favelas, shop, or just experience the beach life for which Rio is famous. Depart for home. Includes: (B), (L).

El Arca: Amazon Cruise in Peru

Tour Itinerary 1:

Day 1, Sunday: Board M/v “El Arca” we will departs Iquitos under the direction of the head guide. Lush forests and rolling grasslands contrast vividly with dramatic lava fields of various ages. Strange birds call from Koa and Ohia trees, and voluminous waterfalls drop from velvet cliffs to the green valley floors. And a language as intriguing as the local history and customs.

A summary of our clockwise island loop trip:

Volcano National Park. We convene in Kailua-Kona, and go up the Kona Coast to visit and walk the trails at Kaloko-Honokohau National Historic Park to see how the ancient Hawaiians lived, fished and cared for their land. Green sea turtles may be found along the shore. Then we get a guided tour at the Ki'i Pohaku Petroglyphs, one of the largest and graphic collections of ancient drawings in the Hawaiian Islands. This a wonderful way to get acquainted with the local culture and terrain. We stay two nights at the family-run Manago Hotel where the sunset views are stunning, and a Japanese-style dinner at Teshima’s is in store.

The next day at Kealakekua Bay and Honaunau, the history is as interesting as the Hawaiian pronunciations. One trek takes us to where Captain Cook, the famous navigator and explorer, first landed in 1778. Ancient lava cliffs line the bay, and we might spot spinner dolphins here. At Honaunau Village we can watch outrigger canoes being launched, walk the shoreline trail in search of whales, or learn native culture in Place of Refuge National Historic Park.

We head south around the bulging island’s southwestern corner, taking a side trip to Ka Lae or South Point, where it is believed the first Tahitian-area sea voyagers landed on this island about 1,000 years ago. We also stop to watch, and talk with the local fishing folk as they fish with special poles and ladders from the rugged lava cliff edges. A coastal path leads to Green Sand Beach, where the ocean has captured an olive-rich crater – a unique and protected swim spot. This is also the site of several coast walks where we usually see humpback whales not far offshore, breaching and spouting in the Pacific waves

We then travel eastward along the south coast to Volcanoes National Park with its mile-high rain forests, lava caves, Nene geese, and steaming Kilauea Caldera. We’ll peer into Halemaumau, the “house of ferns”, stride across the cooled lava pavements of Kilauea Iki Crater, and visit a bird sanctuary of old-growth trees that has been spared from the lava flows. A visitor center helps us interpret these geologic wonders for us. Based at the My Island B&B in Volcano Village for two nights. We’ll hike out through a lava tree-mold forest to the old Pu'u Hulhulu crater, where we can get a glimpse of the Pu'u O'o crater and it's vent, the only one that is currently spewing lava.

Then, we head eastward to non-touristy, interesting Hilo, with its cheery red and green roofs and swaying palms overlooking the Pacific sunrise and Hilo Bay. The Hilo area is renowned for its orchid growing, waterfalls, and proximity to Volcanoes National Park. It lies at the forested foot of the massive shield-type volcano, Mauna Loa (“the long mountain”). Bamboo forest walks to Akaka and Kahuna Falls complement a ramble along lovely Onomea Bay with its sweeping ocean views. The Puna District, a short drive southwards, offers us an Oceanside back roads walk, a black sand beach and an Oceanside thermal pool. Our two-night stay at the Dolphin Bay Hotel is short stroll to Hilo’s shops, the incredible farmer/craft market, and the historic Lyman House. We may also visit the fascinating new new Imiloa Astronomy Center.

Finally we head northward for two days and nights to the Kamuela/Waimea area, with its lush ranchlands and nearby, stunning Kohala Coast beaches. We do a fabulous hike down to the coast through ranchland. Then our Upolu Point walk gives us whale watching opportunities and a visit to the Mookini Heiau, a sacred ceremonial site; then onto Honoipu Landing, where an ancient fishing village site has been partly restored – interesting and evocative. Closer to Kamuela town, we do a fine walk on tree fern-lined paths to the very brink of Waipio Valley, with stunning views of this lush chasm, once home to kings of old Hawaii. Kohala Mountain and massive, snow-capped Mauna Kea (“the white mountain”) are the Kamuela area’s dramatic backdrop. The stay is at the Waimea Country Lodge, near the largest ranch in the USA!

After a final farewell on the South Kohala Coast, we return to the Kona airport at the end of the trip.

Details:

Easy to moderate hikes. The terrain is gently rolling with a few invigorating up and downhills. Walking destinations include: tree fern rainforests, undulating lava “pavements”, beaches, Oceanside back roads and trails. Ireland-like green pasturelands and colorful cinder cones. Figure 5 to 8 miles daily, usually up to 4 miles in the a.m., then a picnic lunch or small outdoor cafe, and another 4 miles or so (optional) in the afternoon. Rest/beach/snorkel/shop days (or half days) are often options too. The flexible schedule will respect you vacation walking and non-walking needs.

The trip starts and ends in Kailua-Kona, so you will need to use that airport. It is advisable that you arrive at least one day before the trip. You can be picked up at your hotel. On the last day you will be dropped off at the airport or your hotel, if you’re staying on, by 1 pm.

10 Days / 9 nights - Botswana Explorer -Mobile Camping Safari

This safari travels with a maximum of seven guests in a specially customized 4x4 safari vehicle, and accompanied by an expert safari guide throughout.

Tour Itinerary:

Our 10 Day Botswana Camping safari (8 nights comfort mobile safari with 1 night hotel accommodation) is a Comfort Mobile Safari in secluded, exclusive bush camps situated in the famous Botswana Reserves and National Parks.

A safari crew pre-erects the comfortable camp.
