Bird Watchers Tour : Australia

Availability 2008: 20th April, 18th May, 17th August, 21st September.
Availability 2009: 19th April, 17th May, 2nd and 16th August, 6th and 20th September.

Tour Itinerary:

Day 1: It’s "up with the birds" as we depart your accommodation and suburbia at 6:00 am in search of everything feathered. This is the beginning of an outback experience of immense variety as we travel north-west along the famous Tanami Track against the northern verge of the West MacDonnell Ranges to Tilmouth Well. A short rest break, coffee, a bite to eat and we travel on towards Newhaven with expected arrival late morning. An early lunch before preparing our camp and getting ourselves organized.

After that we will start our experiences around Newhaven with rock escarpments, red sand-hill Spinifex country and the Lake Bennett Salt Lake system. The variety of vegetation will promote endless stops and leisure time to observe our feathered entertainers. As daylight draws to an end, we’ll find a location to capture the imagination to observe a classic desert sunset. Back to camp for dinner cooked over the campfire as the outback stirs into life. Includes meals: (L), (D).

Day 2: Our morning reveille will be the birds as they break the chill and silence of the outback morning. A hearty breakfast before spending the day traveling this enormous parcel of tranquil land in search of anything rare, unique, varied and beautiful that has wings. This will be a day of group consensus, visiting places and doing things that you want to. The day’s end will be a twilight full of activity with another typical outback sunset before a stunning evening meal and, no doubt, a few stories starting to flow. Includes meals: (B), (L), (D).

Day 3: After another early rise and breakfast we will break camp and, dependent upon weather and track conditions, travel south via permitted Aboriginal Lands including Papunya and Haasts Bluff Communities and then via the Namatjira to Gosse Bluff (Tnorala) before arriving at the oldest Lutheran based Aboriginal Community in Australia – Hermannsburg (Ntaria). An introduction to Hermannsburg’s history, a stop at the local store for refreshments and an early lunch before continuing our journey along the Ellery River system.

This passes through stunning gorge and ravine country towards the location of one of the Territories first remote Police Stations – Boggy Hole. This will be our location for the next two evenings.
After preparing camp you can take a wander and make yourself known to this wonderful location. Should conditions or permission not be available to access the south track, our journey will require a return via our earlier route, traveling the Larapinta Road to Hermannsburg with a late afternoon arrival at Boggy Hole. Includes meals: (B), (L), (D).

Day 4: At your leisure you can stroll your way around this amazing wilderness location. Sit by the water’s edge and be amazed at the resident bird life as the parrots chirp and flit from tree to tree. The Whistling Kites glide the face of the rock escarpment while Red Tailed Cockatoos leave their nightly perch in hunt of seeds in other locations. The clowning antics of the Babblers and the activities of a myriad of species will dominate a day of pure solitude which is truly rare in today’s pace driven lifestyle. Our last night under the stars of the Southern Milky Way, an open fire and discussions dominated by the day’s experiences. Includes meals: (B), (L), (D).

Day 5: We break camp early, meandering our way through the creek bed system towards "Running Waters", a smaller watering system along Ellery Creek. We emerge from the National Park where we join the Ernest Giles track at the junction of the Palmer River. We travel through open mallee and gibber country, home to the raptor and the larger ground birds – Emu and Bustard. Lunch will be at some secluded and remote location for the last time.

We continue to travel east and join the Stuart Highway approx 130km’s south of Alice Springs. Our next stop will be Stuarts Well Roadhouse, a small stopover before our last 90km leg into Alice Springs and return to your Motel. Includes meals: (B), (L), (D). After a return to normality (a shower and modern conveniences) we will meet again for our last meal together at one of Alice’s finest to share in long lasting friendships and no doubt relive and have a laugh over the previous 5 days experiences. UNINI PEACOCK BASS ADVENTURES

For the adventurous angler who enjoys getting off the beaten path to fish and explore unpressured waters, our peacock bass operation on the Unini River offers an ideal peacock bass fishing experience. Visiting anglers will be fishing some of the most pristine and untouched watersheds in the Amazon. Our floating barge operation allows you to pursue record-class peacock bass on the Unini River, as well as within lagoons located in this watershed. This is a true trophy peacock bass fishery. If your desire is to catch lots of 3 to 5 lb fish, this is not the destination for you. However, if fish in excess of 10 lbs are your prized quarry, you will find no better location. The camp is mobile and, depending on fishing conditions, the owners of this operation strive to constantly keep our clients on fish. The Unini River is a tributary of the Rio Negro (itself the largest tributary of the mighty Amazon River) located approximately 210 miles northwest of Manaus. The river is roughly 200 miles long with at least 250 connecting lakes and lagoons throughout its course. Its location is such that it can only be reached by private charter plane. The camp is located about 165-200 miles from where the Unini River empties into the Rio Negro. About 20 miles up river from the mouth, there are three sets of rapids and falls which prohibit navigation further up river except during the period of highest water levels in the summer months. There are small villages near the area of the falls, but only a few scattered locals live further upriver and the fishing pressure and commercial is virtually nonexistent. The catch rates at this operation during the 2004-05 season for both numbers and trophy fish (those over 14 lbs) was as good, or better, than any operation in Brazil.

You will be fishing main river structure, as well as a multitude of lakes, backwater bays and hidden lagoons off the Unini River. The typical fishing day is long (we figure you can rest back in the states) and runs from 6:30 a.m. until 6:00 p.m. Anglers are paired two to a boat with an experienced Brazilian guide. The boats are 17-1/2 feet long, have stabile raised casting decks, swivel seats, 50-HP outboards and electric trolling motors. These boats can cruise over shallow sandbars and flats and get you into places that other, heavier, fiberglass boats cannot reach. The fishing boats are fully equipped aluminum boats with outboard engines, life jackets, first-aid kits, and an icebox for cold drinks and snacks. One of the most appealing and exciting aspects of fishing for peacock bass is their propensity for attacking surface lures and flies. The strike is so dramatic that you will be startled when the first few occur. Peacock bass fishing is very similar to largemouth bass fishing in the states. Both species ambush prey from cover and structure. Cast topwater plugs, jerkbaits, Banjo Minnows, spoons or jigs to stumps, shoreline blowdowns, rockpiles, creek mouths and sandbars .If you desire to fly fish, the most successful flies are larger profiled patterns - all tied on 2-0 to 4-0 quality saltwater hooks - such as Dahlberg-style divers, large profiles baitfish patterns, High-Tie or variations of Lefty's Deceivers & Clouser Minnows. These should be tied in a diversity of colors. This region is most productive following the rainy season, as the rivers, creeks and lagoons recede and the fish are drawn out of the maze of trees, root systems and lush vegetation. Keep in mind that the productiveness of your peacock bass adventure is largely dictated by the water levels, and occasionally the rainy season fails to abide by schedules and may add mid-season downpours.
